Boscos ? Nashville’s overly confident brewpub

Figure A. Max Douglass downing a German something-or-other at Boscos in Nashville. I didn’t really pay attention to his beer because it tasted… non-exceptional.

The roads were actually icy as Max and I ventured out to test Nashville’s craft brewing scene. Boscos generally has a bunch of “seasonal” beers on tap, which means there’s always something new to try. I tried the “Wee Heavier,” which was touted as “wee heavier” than anything else they brew.

I think “Wee Lamer” or “Wee Wee” would have been a more apt description. It was a dark beer ? in color, anyway. It tasted like the bastard child of a porter and a rancid glass of water. Okay, it wasn’t THAT bad. It was drinkable. It was better than most commercial beers. But Boscos, seriously? If you’re going to make a heavy beer, make it HEAVY. And the “Wee Heavier” had little complexity to speak of. I prefer our first round stout to it, to be honest. Both had that faintly overwhelming alcoholic kick to them at the end. Not the good kind, but the inexperienced homebrewed kind.

Granted, I’ve had better beers from Boscos, but they’ve just been demoted in my mind. And given the absence of any kind of craft brewing scene in Nashville (a few miscellaneous brew pubs and one micro), that’s saying a lot.
