Usually brewing is a way for me to unwind on Monday nights. Last night, for some reason, was stressful. I might even characterize it as “sucky.” Why? I think there were a few reasons, not the least of which was that I started off the night by milling the wrong grains. Joel needs to label the grains better. Sometimes when Joel writes “Carapils” it looks like “Pale 2-Row.”

So we were behind schedule from the beginning. Then Jeff’s OCD side came out and played God. Jeff was on a sanitation kick, so he was boiling everything in sight. Including my face. And arms. Thanks Jeff, for the 3rd-degree burns.

To top it all off, we don’t even have that much beer. Due to a recent Labor Day holiday, a batch of moldy IPA, and an upcoming motorcycle rally, we’re running on empty.
Fortunately, I still love brewing. I guess it was bound to happen sometime. Even my favorite activities can turn sour (or moldy). Maybe I need a beer.

P.S. Jeff and Joel, I love you!

  • i think you should just face facts and admit that when the immigrant labor is absent things fall apart.

  • Goodness. Blaming others, complaining about your fellow MNB cohorts, Jonathan you might need a nap.

  • Everything isn’t always peaches and cream eh!? Damn straight it isn’t. I for one am happy to hear about the good and bad here at Monday Night Brewery.

Here’s to next Monday night being a damn sight better!

    Cheers!

  • Burns always piss me off. One night I burned my hand because I was using my immersion chiller and I looked the one end up to the hose and the other was tucked away. When I turned the hose on, the exit water started swinging around so I ran over and grabbed it…without thinking about the fact that while the water going into the immersion chiller was cold, the water coming out was HOT! Live and learn.

  • Burns? Been there done that…

Erlenmeyer flasks are built for heat, so I thought boiling a quart of wort in there for a starter would be a good idea. Turns out, boil-overs in a vessel of that shape are rather easy. Then, the stupidity arrived… As I saw it was about to boil over, I killed the heat, and thought that grabbing the top of the flask (with a towel, you know, for protection), would be a good idea.

Not so much. But hey, I’m told that chicks dig scars, right?
