The new Eye Patch Ale label
I’ve been staring at this label for far too long. It’s not dramatically different from the old Swashchuckler label, which is part of the reason why I’m not quite sure it’s done. But maybe it doesn’t need to be all that different. Regardless, Jeff said I should just throw it online and see what people think. In business we have a phrase for this: “Run it up the flagpole and see who salutes.”
Needless to say, it’s business time.
I would love your comments on the theme, typeface, etc. But more than anything I need comments on the color. Here are the two front-runners right now. We can’t use blue on both our Eye Patch Ale and our Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale, so we had to ditch the teal.

I totally feel red is more piratey. bloody.
I like the second, more muted version. It seems more like a worn, torn Jolly Roger. Fitting for the pirate theme.
Need a meaner skull. Perhaps a spanish galleon or pirate with parrot on shoulder. Keep working it. Not quite there yet.
Break away from that Tan border, Black and Red would be much sexie…um more pirate like. Plus, white text on black is the new hotness!
I like the first one- the second one looks like a pumpkin-ish color. Go for #1… Maybe a meaner skull is better.
contrast is a good thing- go red… maybe we could get a skull with bone rabbit ears, not unlike donnie darko, but then who would drink something so creepy?
I like the red one better fellas. Hopefully I can get a taste of your IPA one of these days. I’m starting my home brewing adventures next weekend.
Agreed. Like the Red. A lot. Orange/Tan gives a feel of halloween and pumpkins.
Red is sounding like the clear winner (sorry Seth). As I’m looking at it now I think I do need to make the text stand out a little more from the rest of the label. I could either thicken it a bit or maybe darken the red to make the white pop. I’ll work on it…
As for making the skull more creepy… I don’t think so. We’re not trying to scare the womenfolk.
The red one by far – as for the rest of the label if you loosen up your line spacing a bit it may go a long way in making it more readable. It’s a great graphic and a great logo – really well done!
