The coolest guys in the world are interviewed

Apr 30, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Friends with benefits, Perspectives  //  No Comments

In a moment of weakness, Eric over at HolzBrew thought it would be a good idea to interview us about the process of starting a brewery. Eric soon realized the folly of this interview request, but nevertheless he followed through with it.

Read the interview in its entirety. Do it, you big pansy.

You didn’t even click on the link. Pansy.

Putting the “up” in “hops update”

These things are growing like the national deficit. They’ve already reached the top of our trellis and it isn’t even May yet.

Let’s hope they’re as keen on actual hop flower production as they are about reaching the sun. We had a decent haul last year but all indications are that we will have a mega-haul this year, at least in Georgia terms. All that you see are Cascade, with the exception of the lonely guy on the right, which is a Chinook. Joel is knitting the Chinook plant a little sweater for the cold nights, just so he knows he’s still loved. And for good measure, an actual photo of Joel, looking longingly at what will soon be:

And don’t get me started on the thickness of the bines compared to last year! I will literally talk your ear OFF!

Monday Night recap: “It’s about time” Edition

Apr 28, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Brewing  //  1 Comment

After one of the longest weeks in existence off, we “Monday-nighted it” for real last night. We had 5 beers on tap, and even though it was an abbreviated evening since we didn’t actually brew, it was a fun evening. I would like to take a moment to share this photo that Jeanine took. Why is it special? Because this is probably the only shot of all three owners socializing on a Monday night. Usually at least one of us is working (and complaining about how Jeff isn’t working), but the duties were lighter last night.

One thing we did do last night was dry hop the latest [experimental] batch of our Eye Patch Ale. We’re curious to see how it turns out, since we tried some first-wort hopping on this batch. First indications are that it is definitely more hoppy than its predecessors, but potentially in a good way. We’ll see how it tastes once it has been dry hopped and carbonated.

Thanks to everyone who came last night, we hope to be actually brewing next week. And a little bird told me that Joel will be out of town, so maybe we’ll actually be productive!

Little beer tasting tonight from 7:30-9pm

Apr 27, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Brewing  //  No Comments

We won’t actually be brewing tonight for a variety of reasons. And we need to shut down early for that same variety of reasons. But we still want to hang out, so we’ll be having a little beer tasting tonight from 7:30-9pm. Yes, that’s only an hour and a half. So this isn’t one of those things where it’s cool to show up fashionably late, unless you also think it’s cool to get kicked out of the CEO’s house.

Can you dig? Hope to see you guys tonight!

Revised Eye Patch Ale label

Apr 26, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels  //  14 Comments

I’m looking for your feedback. Does this eye patch look better than the the original? I left the sides of the label off, so disregard that. We are just looking at the actual eye patch itself. Comments appreciated!

“The eye patch looks awkward”

Apr 24, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels  //  No Comments

So maybe you’re right. There are many comments proclaiming the awkwardness of the eye patch in our new label mockup, which I guess is what happens when I try to freehand something. I think what we should be shooting for, in terms of look and style, can be found here:

Eye Patch Ale label mockup

Apr 23, 2009   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels  //  12 Comments

We’ve taken our sweet little time pulling together label mockups ever since we unveiled our new logo earlier this year, mostly because we have definite opinions and want to make sure we get things right. First up is the Eye Patch Ale. Expect the Drafty Kilt label soon, at which point you should hopefully be able to see the direction we are going in with all of our branding. Be sure to click on the image for a close-up version.

So what do you think? Is this something that you would pick off of the shelf if you had no idea who we were? Honesty is always the best policy.
