Eye Patch Ale label mockup

We’ve taken our sweet little time pulling together label mockups ever since we unveiled our new logo earlier this year, mostly because we have definite opinions and want to make sure we get things right. First up is the Eye Patch Ale. Expect the Drafty Kilt label soon, at which point you should hopefully be able to see the direction we are going in with all of our branding. Be sure to click on the image for a close-up version.

So what do you think? Is this something that you would pick off of the shelf if you had no idea who we were? Honesty is always the best policy.

  1. I like it. Its like Mad Men meets piracy. Very nice.

  2. WOW!!!! This is a really sick label. I would totally pick this stuff up if I saw it on the shelves! AWESOME!!!!

  3. I cannot WAIT to see this on an actual bottle!

  4. 99% awesome. The remaining 1% can be made up by moving the eye patch down – right now it’s like he’s looking at the camera, but I think it would read better if he’s raising his fist and staring just below the frame.

    But good stuff either way!

  5. I really like it, but it needs 200% more fealty to my creative genius in naming it. ;-)

Also, I think you need to consider doing a “white label” beer brand/style so you can just keep “FPO” on everything.

You’ll be hailed as innovators for taking the short route.

One last thing: if you’re going to have the “keep refrigerated” message, have you thought about something pirate-pithy to add there? Or maybe a suggested serving temperature (or is that too frou frou)?

I was thinking “Keep Refrig – Arrrgh – ated” or the like.

    Too literal?

  6. I agree with Nate, the eyepatch is a little awkward.

  7. Thanks for the comments, guys.

Seth: Amazing idea. I’m going to see if I can’t work it in. You have a way with words, in much the same way that you have a way with women.

Nate/Rachel: The eye patch was added to the photo that the logo is based on so that we got it directly over the eye. Nate, I completely understand where you are coming from with the “looking at the camera” comment, but I think we will keep him looking at the camera just so we can have some consistency from label to label. The core “dude with a suit and loose tie” won’t be changing, just his accouterments. I will revisit the awkwardness though – I think if I made it round closer to the corners of his head that could help.

  8. Well done, Jonathan. One suggestion: define just what sort of sensibilities a pirate uses to balance a beer. Rogue sensibilities, perhaps? Devil-may-care sensibilities?

Also, while the Mark Twain quote is truly classic, you might consider a contemporary variation. I’m sure that kidnapped sea captain in Somalia has some zingers, like, “Thanks, Navy Seals, for shooting those pirates in the head for me.”

  9. I agree that the eye patch looks a little awkward. The band should be more in the middle of the patch and not aligned with the top. Other than that it looks awesome…good job.

  10. [...] maybe you’re right. There are many comments proclaiming the awkwardness of the eye patch in our new label mockup, which I guess is what happens [...]

  11. Dig it.

  12. [...] looking for your feedback. Does this eye patch look better than the the original? I left the sides of the label off, so disregard that. We are just looking at the actual eye patch [...]
