Get the Monday Night discount at Hop City Beer!

Q: What’s better than an amazing selection of 1200+ different craft beers?
A: Discounts on the same craft beer.
Mention “Monday Night Brewery” at Hop City every Monday night to get a special discount on all craft beer purchases. How are we able to offer such a bargain? Let’s just say that we tortured Hop City’s owner, Kraig Torres. Well… it was more of an interview. But since Joel was in attendance, I’m sure it felt like torture. Look out for the full interview next week.
And if you haven’t checked out Hop City yet, you must. Great selection, great service.
What was the first beer you ever had?
Mine was a tepid Rolling Rock. It was terrible. Ready… GO!
Monday Night recap: “Cool that wort” edition
Despite a 2.5 hour long sparging debacle (our first attempt at a mashout), we ended the night at about 10pm. Thanks to Melvin. Melvin, avid homebrewer and self-proclaimed super genius, was kind enough to let us demo his chilling system as we think about upgrading our current setup. Blah blah blah, submersion pump in ice water, blah blah blah, recirculating wort over immersion chiller, blah blah blah. Let’s skip to the good stuff. From boiling wort to 70 degrees in 12 minutes.
That. Just. Happened. In case you’re interested in the details, the setup is essentially this. Thanks again to Melvin for the link.

We brewed an original India Brown Ale recipe (not a clone like some other brewers we know and do not respect). This was a first for us, so we’re excited to see how it turns out. Heavy on the hops and medium-bodied. (Don’t tell Jeff, but even though the recipe called for .15 lbs of Chocolate Malt, I added .18 lbs).
In other, perhaps more important news, Joel revealed his true colors last night after Andrew brought him one of his favorite adult beverages, Bacardi Silver Mojito. Witness the presentation ceremony. Note: No Bacardi Silver Mojitos were harmed in the making of this blog post.

Memorialize THIS, Mr. Raincloud
Happy Memorial Day, everyone! If you live in the Atlanta area, you’re most likely enjoying the overcast skies and the impending threat of rain.

We pay no heed to such things as weather. We will be brewing tonight, rain or shine. What will we be brewing? Jeff has informed us that it will be a surprise, which is a code word for “I’m tired of brewing the same beers and I want to experiment.” Be afraid. Though this will undoubtedly turn out better than our Casserole Ale.
UPDATE: We are brewing an India Brown Ale… i.e. a hoppy porter. Made famous by Dogfish Head and Terrapin. I for one am excited.
While we may have a small amount of our beer on tap tonight (depending on the carbonation levels), I would strongly suggest bringing your own beer, as there will only be enough for a tasting. That’s right. Another BYOB. That’s only if you want to be guaranteed a delicious alcoholic beverage, of course.
Our Cascade hops know nothing of the recession
We know this because they are growing like pirate profits in Somalia (too soon?). They’re starting to bud already, which scares us, frankly. I KNEW that guy that sold us those “hop steroids” out of the back of his truck in the Kroger parking lot wasn’t legit.

Our hops have gotten so out-of-control that they are have reached the top of their new trellis and in some cases are dangling down, almost touching the ground again. Which is a problem. Enter Joel and his amazing plot to create a canopy over the driveway. Seriously, if this works as expected, it is going to look so fly. If it doesn’t work, Jeff’s wife is going to be so mad. Go hops, go!

Note: I did some light Photoshop work on Joel’s shirt.
Beer Tap TV names Monday Night Brewery “beer blog of the week”
I don’t know what they’re smoking drinking, but Beer Tap TV named Monday Night Brewery the beer blog of the week. Hey, we’ll take it. I queued up the video of the show to the part where they start talking about us (around 31:30 in, if you’re curious). There is also a dog that runs into the frame, thus proving a point I’ve been trying to make for years, that dogs enjoy weeknights more than weekends.
Thanks for the love, guys!
JailHouse Brewing busting out
We had a special visit on Monday from Glenn Golden, the head honcho at JailHouse Brewing, a soon-to-be microbrewery opening up in Hampton, GA. We’ve been following JailHouse for awhile now and it was great to finally connect. Glenn is a few months ahead of us in terms of schedule, and unlike us is not going the contract brewing route. He is brewing in his own building (an old jailhouse) from the outset.
JailHouse’s first two production beers will be an IPA and an American-style wheat beer. There has already been talk about putting the Monday Night IPA and the JailHouse IPA into a no-holds-barred cage match. Pirate vs. Hardened Criminal. Only one man leaves alive.
Glenn also brought Blake and Chad with him, who are going to be responsible for distributing his beer once he starts production. Before the night was said and done we were able to snap a picture.
From L-R: Chad Floyd, Jeff Heck, Jonathan Baker, Glenn Golden, Joel Iverson, Blake Rice

Main takeaway from the picture: It helps to be of an average height when participating in the beer startup community in Georgia. Sorry Joel, that means you’re out. Bottom line, it was great to meet Glenn and the gang and I’m sure you’ll hear more from them in the future.
