Monday Night and wine coolers

Why don’t any craft brewers make a wine cooler? There are a few potential reasons. First, there is no beer in a wine cooler. Though there is a both a “win” and a “cool.” Second, wine coolers traditionally aren’t hopped, soured, or barrel-aged. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be. And third, most craft brewers are scared of colored beverages. They’re more comfortable in the “pale yellow to dark brown” range. And I don’t blame them. Some of my favorite foods fall into this same color spectrum. However, that doesn’t mean we should write off an entire potential market. Wine coolers were big in the 80s, and the 80s can’t be ALL wrong. I mean, look at spandex and Rick Astley.
Enter Monday Night.
Joel has been getting pretty excited about “Project Whisper” lately. Project Whisper is Joel’s idea to make a strawberry kiwi wine cooler under the Monday Night name. An ambitious project, to say the least. But Joel appears undaunted. Today he sent me links to articles on how to make your own wine cooler.
This little gem sounded particularly promising. Especially the following quote:
This is a zesty five ingredient beverage, that is good by the glass or as a punch. Make it for a brunch, bridal shower or give a bottle as a housewarming gift.
We all know how huge the bridal shower market is these days. And, like wine coolers, it’s largely untapped by craft brewers. Methinks Joel is onto a viable business opportunity…
Note: Rest assured that Monday Night will never make a wine cooler. We will, however, take every opportunity to make fun of Joel, one of our co-founders. Although, if we HAD to make a wine cooler, I would be curious to know what kind we should make. Any requests?

Ah, glorious Monday

While we won’t be formally brewing tonight, we thought it worth posting this photograph submitted by loyal fan and lamb smoker, Tubbs. Bask in the manliness that can be accomplished when one dons a teal Monday Night shirt and pair of work gloves. Bask in it.
Kegs.

We are now the proud owners of 470 of these. Well… not exactly. We actually own some of these 1/2 barrel kegs and some smaller, 1/6 barrel kegs. But total, 470. And that’s just for starters, folks.
Now to put something in them…
Monday Night recap: Hops for the Hopless edition

In addition to brewing a Belgian dubbel last night, we also strung up our hop plants, approximately 1 month late in the season. “Sorry, Messrs. Hops. We’ll try to do better next year. Now grow up your vines like weeds!” Do you know what’s a scary sight? Jeff with a saw.
He took it open himself to saw stakes to nail the twine down into the ground, or “assert his manhood,” as he told us. Fortunately no fingers were lost in the process.
Jeff was actually really good at threading the twine. Probably because it’s so similar to sewing. ZING! We had a great crowd last night, despite having very little beer. For which we apologize again. Sorry, we sincerely thought those kegs were full. We were also graced with the presence of Ale Sharpton ? Atlanta’s premier gangsta craft beer guru. Check him out.
And one of these days, we’ll get a real tap for our Blind Pirate Double IPA. The masking tape on the tap looks decidedly… not gangsta.
Thanks to everyone who came last night! We’re excited that the weather is finally cooperating.
Dubbel the Monday
Howdy folks. We’re going to play around with our Belgian Dubbel recipe tonight, so feel free to come by and make history with us around 8pm. Actually, that might be an overpromise. We probably won’t make history. But we will make some darn good beer.
Last minute update: BYOB tonight. Oops. That is our bad… we only have a schmeensy bit of beer.
No brewing this week

Big news coming soon…
…and we’re going to break it via our newsletter. So if you want to be the first on your block to know, best sign up, foolz.
You may be thinking to yourself, “But I think I already am signed up. And I haven’t gotten a newsletter since November.” Yep, that’s entirely plausible. We send out newsletters about twice a year at this point. Only when we have significant news, not when Joel tries to spam everyone he knows with his new idea for a Monday Night Raspberry Vanilla Wine Cooler (which he has codenamed “Whisper” for some strange reason).
But seriously, if you’d like to be on our email list, we’ll be sending out something exciting (for us, at least) in the next couple weeks. If you don’t want to be on our email list, fine. It’s a free country.
