A 1080 Christmas – this Friday, Dec 16

Dec 14, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Festivals and Events, Revelry  //  No Comments

If you like drinking weeknight beer on non-weeknights, while sitting in Santa’s lap, then we’ve got the party for you. Come out to Sound Table (or, more accurately, the place right next to Sound Table) and support The Global Give. Drinks, music, and Santa. Plus your donation to help kids get Christmas. What could be more festive*?

*True, adding a workshop full of elves would be more festive. But we couldn’t negotiate terms with the Elf Union in time.

Reflections after our first beer festival season

Nov 15, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Festivals and Events, Perspectives  //  1 Comment

We survived our first beer festival season as “brewers” instead of “drinkers.” Though, truth be told, we were also drinkers. It was a fun, busy time with multiple events every week. In some ways, November feels like the calm after the storm. A cold, dark calm, but a calm, nonetheless. This cold, dark weather has got us reflecting some on our first beer festival season:

  • We need a tent. August and October are hot months. And with my receding hair line, sunburned scalp isn’t a good look.
  • The beginning of beer festivals are more fun than the end. At the end, there are usually a few beers that have run out (many times ours), and there’s much more stumbling and yelling. I’m not sure why.
  • “Give me whatever beer is lightest” is the worst phrase in the world. While our Eye Patch Ale is technically the “lightest” beer we brew, it isn’t light compared to what most people consider light. Sure, it’s a pretty easy drinking IPA, but it’s no Coors Light. And we’ll never make a Coors Light.
  • Joel shows up late for things. We already knew this. But now we know it even more so.
  • We love beer festivals. It’s really fun interacting with folks, talking about our beers, and being outside. Oh, and drinking beer.
Here’s to another great season next year!

It is easier to dress like a pirate than a Scotsman

Oct 28, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Festivals and Events, Friends with benefits, Pirates, Revelry, Tastings  //  1 Comment

This was the main takeaway from our Hop City beer tasting at Octane this week, in which we gave free pint glasses to those who dressed as pirates or wore kilts.

This makes intuitive sense, once you think about it. A kilt is a commitment. An eye patch is easy. A kilt costs serious money and requires someone who has either really high self esteem or no fashion sense to wear one (sometimes both). An eye patch can be as easy as wrapping a dirty napkin around your eye, in some cases. See below for exactly what I’m talking about.

We’ll start with the pirate family… including the one and only kilt-wearing man we served.

Let not the cuteness of this young pirate fool you. For he will STEAL YOUR BOOTY!

The bird makes the outfit. Unless that’s a part of her arm? In which case I suggest immediate medical attention.

Perhaps he’s not dressed “as a pirate,” but that’s a pirate expression if I ever saw one. I wonder what unfortunate swashbuckling incident led to 4  pirates simultaneously losing sight in their right eyes? Probably an octopus with hot pokers for arms. (And yes, I know the real reason pirates wear eye patches.)

You aren’t fooling anyone, sir. That is a napkin over your glasses. But we’ll count it, because you do look ridiculous, and that’s the first rule of pirate fashion.

Sell it with that face, Captain Duct Tape!

And finally, the cutest pirate couple AAAARRRH-ound.

Dress like a pirate (or wear a kilt), get a pint glass!

“The Pirate’s Christmas.” That’s the name of this piece of art. And it’s called that because these pirates are in stocks at Christmastime. It’s really pretty sad, especially if you love pirates.

Fortunately, Pirates aren’t usually oppressed around Halloween. And in honor of Halloween, we’re giving away a free pint glass to anyone who dresses like a pirate (or wears a kilt) to our Hop City beer tasting at Octane Coffee tomorrow, October 26, between 5:30-7pm.

What’s that you say?

Why pirates? And kilts? Can’t I dress like a slutty cop or Pocahontas instead? I already had my outfit all picked out… It’s the same outfit I’ve been wearing for years. For old times’ sake?

No. Because we make only two beers at the moment, Eye Patch Ale (pirates) and Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale (dudes wearing kilts). Pocahontas was cool 10 years ago. Pirates are perpetually cool. Consider this a wake-up call. And see you there!

Oh – free beer, no matter what you’re wearing!

Wear a Shirt, Get a Glass – at Decatur Beer Fest

Oct 13, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Festivals and Events, Schwag  //  No Comments

Decatur Beer Fest is this Saturday. We’re stoked. So stoked, in fact, that we’re going to give away a free Monday Night pint glass to anyone who wears their Monday Night shirt to the festival and swings by our booth to prove it.

It’s really a win/win. Look as smooth and cool as this guy*:

And get a free pint glass!

*Yes, that is a picture of me. And yes, I do work out 24/7.
