Laissez-Faire Barleywine: The Label

We’ve been waffling on a name and label for our barleywine, which has been cellared now for around 4 months. After sampling a few choice bottles over the past few months, we’re confident that this beer is going to kick some serious ass. As such, we need to make sure that the name and label do the beer justice. So don’t hold back with your feedback. If we need to start over we will. Suggestions are welcome.

As of now, the quote comes from economist Thomas Sowell:

The first lesson of economics is scarcity; There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics.

My dad made his first appearance at MNB last night. He was in town on business, whatever that means. In any event, I thought it a appropriate time to post this label which was created as a prank for his motorcycle club. Check out the inspiration here. (Thanks Mark!) Apparently my dad is a pretty big goober. Man, I’m glad that doesn’t run in the family.

Now accepting comments, suggestions, and high praises. Many many thanks to Dave who provided the name for us. The quote for this bad boy comes from Joseph Smith. Yes, THE Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism:

There has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation. It has been like splitting hemlock knots with a corn-dodger for a wedge and a pumpkin for a beetle.

The definition of a corn-dodger?

Corn Dodger
1. Noun. Small oval cake of corn bread baked or fried (chiefly southern).

The lines are officially open!

Laissez-Faire Barleywine? Yea or Nay?

Sep 25, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels, New brews  //  15 Comments

Many of you are aware of the trouble we’ve had coming up with a suitable name for our barleywine, which will be available come Christmastime. When storing the barleywine, I wrote “Laissez-Faire” on the boxes to signify that people needs to keeps their grubby paws off of our masterpiece. Laissez-Faire represents, of course, the economic principle of a free market economy, in which the government keeps out of the grown man bidness. (Brad will be proud).

Jeff saw the boxes and determined that this would indeed be a good name for a brew. I concurred. Joel grumbled something. And thus it was decided.

Our dilemma is now to figure out what to put on the label. Our names and labels thus far have revolved around a character (a clown pirate IPA, a ninja pale ale, a lumberjack stout, etc.). We’d like to keep the streak alive. Unfortunately, we have no idea what to put on a label for a Laissez-Faire Barleywine. WE NEED YOUR IDEAS! THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO BECOME IMMORTAL!

Names to ponder

Bottling our barleywine on Monday has got me thinking about names again… And I can’t get away from the hobo motif. Do any of these strike a chord (or trigger a better name?):

Bindlestiff Barleywine
Glad Rags Barleywine
Jungle Buzzard Barleywine
Steam Train Steve Barleywine

I encourage you to go here or here for inspiration.

The Southern Monk gains a home

Aug 26, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels, New brews  //  2 Comments

We are finally ready to introduce a new label to the world. Presenting… The Southern Monk. Or, another possible option, Mulletproof Monk. Granted, the monk is actually the opposite of mulletproof, but I thought it funny nonetheless. The quote for the Southern Monk label comes from Will Rogers:

?The South is dry and will vote dry. That is, everybody sober enough to stagger to the polls will.?

Monk with a mullet TAKE THREE!

Aug 21, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Labels, New brews  //  8 Comments

After two iterations of a monk with a mullet, I’m finally ready to reveal the latest Southern Monk madness. For those not following the saga, we’re looking for a mulleted monk to grace the label for our newest peach Belgian beer. So. Does this look any more like a monk with a mullet? If not, why? Is it because you’re bli d?
