Wife of the Year – 2nd Year in a Row
I recently had a birthday and I’ve gotta hand it to my wife for yet another great birthday gift. Last year she surprised me with 144 MNB pint glasses, this year she gave me a subscription to “Beer of the Month” club.
Every thirty days I’ll receive a 12 new beers (3 beers of 4 kinds) from micros across America. First batch was mostly winter ales or variations thereof and I’m excited to see what else starts coming down the pipe. They also include a handy newletter that has write-ups about each of the beers and random beer facts (such as in 1950 80% of alcohol consumed was whiskey, in 2002 60% of alchohol consumed is now beer…albeit most of it is probably BudBeer).
I’m officially nominating and awarding her the “Wife of the Year” title for the 2nd year in a row and propose that we celebrate the occasion tonight…with a few beers.
Root, root, root for the beeeeeer team…
Those who came Monday night already know that we brewed up some root beer. Don’t worry, we had our priorities straight. Beer first, root beer second. Maybe even third. Once the beer brewing was underway I tiptoed inside and brewed up a 5 gallon batch of root beer on the stove. And just so everyone knows, there are 4 pounds of sugar in every 5 gallons of root beer. That’s how you know it’s good.
If smell is any indication, this stuff will taste delicious. We hope to have it carbonated and ready to serve next Monday.
P.S. I apologize to Andy for sloshing flat, tepid root beer all over his face. That root beer totally pwned his delicate features.
Root beer? Riiiight…
I helped Jeff and Hannah (Jeff’s truly accommodating better half) move into a new neighborhood today. The same neighborhood that Joel and I plan to move into in the next few years ? and the neighborhood in which we hope to open our brewery.
Not only was it cool to start to see our vision of a location-based business/life combo start to evolve, but I had a treat awaiting me when I got back home: root beer soda extract!

Monday Night Brewery will soon be venturing into the wonderful land of sodas. Some people may disparage this decision, but keep in mind that this is only an experiment. We want to become more family friendly, so we’re going to see if we can make a decent root beer. I think we’ll be able to brew root beer fairly easily, especially since we already have all of the kegging equipment. We’re going to use extract for the first batch… if all goes well, who knows? And we will also NOT be brewing less beer. That would just be silly.
I’ve found some great information on brewing root beer here and here. But if anyone out there has any tips, lay them on us. We don’t want to blow up anything. (Joel wants to blow up everything).
