“I don’t want no trub, a trub is a guy don’t get no love from me”

Jun 20, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Friends with benefits, Support us  //  4 Comments

…unless that trub happens to be Trub Wortwurst, in which case trub is a guy who gets TONS of love from me. Why? Because “Trub” AKA Robert has won our monthly pint glass drawing. It’s actually less of a drawing and more of a “ask a co-worker to pick a number between 1 and 63.” And lucky number 51, Trub Wortwurst, is the winner.

If you haven’t signed up yet, make sure to. Anyone who is already on our mailing list is automatically entered into the next month’s round. And no, you don’t have to be a blogger to win. You just have to have a name and an email address.

Save Georgia’s m crobrewery!

Jun 14, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Industry, MNB: legitimate business, Support us  //  1 Comment

I have gotten multiple emails today calling for action against an initiative being voted on in the Georgia Department of Revenue. In a nutshell, there is a chance that microbrewery tours in Georgia could become severely restricted in the amount of beer each person can sample. The cap would be 2 oz per beer, with a maximum of 16 oz.

As three guys interested in starting a microbrewery in Georgia in a few years, this would affect us in more than one way. Yes, brewery tours would most likely be a little farther down the list of things to do. But, as potential brewery owners, we’re also interested in keeping brewery regulations… how do I put this… not Communist.

So take a few minutes and give the GA Department of Revenue your mind. Send the following note to this address. Make sure to add YOUR name and address. You can find out more information here.

To: Commissioner Graham

Re: Notice Number AT-2007-1
560-2-2-.61

The Georgia Department of Revenue has proposed a significant change in the states’ long standing policy on service limitations for brewery tours. The proposed new rule will adversely affect my decision as a customer of the breweries, to attend the tours. By doing so it will also put at risk the brewer’s investment in facilities designed to attract and accommodate tour attendees such as myself and will severely limit the marketing and sales of the brewery’s products. I oppose adoption of the proposed rule change and respectfully urge the department to withdraw proposed rule 3a.

Sincerely,

Three cheers for beer wives!

jeffhannah.jpgI was reading a post on brewvana and was reminded yet again of the blessings that the wives of MNB have showered upon us. Of course, this is coming from the one MNB member sans wife.

Joel‘s wife Mary Stuart has been nothing short of an angel letting us turn her home into a brewery at least once every week. And Jeff’s wife Hannah has been pretty cool too, I guess… Well, she hasn’t been COMPLETELY lame anyway…

Happy birthday Hannah! (Hannah’s the one pictured behind Jeff’s big head.) Read another inspirational beer wife story here.

Who knew that Brooklyn had something to offer us

Apr 26, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Industry, Support us  //  4 Comments

The MNB gang has been circulating beer books for awhile as a form of general knowledge building. Beer School (Hindy/Potter) has recently been passed on to m by our pal Joel. This book chronicles the rise of the Brooklyn Brewery.

While I’m not necessarily sold on Brooklyn’s beer (their chocolate stout tastes like pure alcohol), the book itself is quite interesting. I’ve arrived on a few key insights pertinent to us as we continue our quest towards owning a micro.

Joel, feel free to add to these as you see fit.

  1. Distribution is going to be a key component, especially being able to achieve decent distribution early on in the process ? and Georgia’s distribution laws are… how you say… old-fashioned.
  2. Brooklyn Brewery overpayed for their lame logo and I’m glad that we will be able to do most of the creative in-house (at least initially)
  3. Seriously, Brooklyn Brewery’s logo is lame. You’d think it was a gift from the beer gods as they dedicated an entire chapter to how cool it is.
  4. We need to create defined roles and a defined mission (working on the roles, I think we’ve nailed the mission)
  5. Connecting to the community in which we brew is important and necessary
  6. We can totally do this. The Brooklyn Brewery guys were also homebrewers. Both were English majors. Tom worked for a bank, Steve was a journalist.

If anyone else has any insight they’d like to share ? or a good book we should read ? let us know.

Win those free pint glasses!

Ever since we’ve announced a monthly drawing for our Monday Night Brewery pint glasses (see pic) for mailing list subscribers, wouldn’t you know it, we’ve had an influx of subscriptions! It’s almost like you guys don’t really care about us… you just want our glasses.

Oh wait. It’s exactly like that. Nonetheless, we will still be holding a monthly drawing for all those fair-weather friends out there. Sign up either on the sidebar to the right or, alternately, here. Get you some!

Cat fight!

Apr 20, 2007   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Revelry, Support us  //  4 Comments

When four men enter into a business agreement, there is bound to be conflict. We at Monday Night Brewery have just emerged from the first of what I’m sure will be many spats. I won.

The brawl was essentially about our current focus, and whether or not we should be shifting even more resources towards brewing and knowledge building in light of our recent brewing mishaps. I, of course, got defensive and slapped Peter like a little schoolgirl.

Ultimately we arrived at the conclusion that we were all on the same page to begin with. But that’s not the point. The point is that we have tasted the death fruits of friction, and have found them sweet.

(Actually, the point is that fights can either make us stronger or tear us apart. We now resolve, with cyberspace as our witness, to keep the lines of communication open and to not be afraid of confrontation and conflict.)

Free Monday Night Brewery pint glasses!

mnbglass.JPGSeeing as Joel is now the proud father of a plethora of MNB pint glasses, we thought it about time to start giving some of these bad boys away. Every month, starting in the beginning of May, we will be giving two pint glasses away to someone on our mailing list. So for those of you suffering pint glass envy, this is the perfect way for you to get rid of those busted plastic cups in your cupboard. More important than that, this is a great way for you to support your favorite soon-to-be-microbrewery and stay informed about our dirty deeds. We have no doubt that all of the cool kids will be signing up soon.

Funny story, we haven’t actually sent out any emails to our mailing list yet. Probably because our current list is comprised primarily of our moms, dads and siblings.

Sign up here.
