Beer-infused cupcakes, and they are all for me

Jan 12, 2012   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Food & beer pairings, Friends with benefits  //  3 Comments

So there we were at a craft beer tweet-up at Edgewood Corner Tavern, minding our own business. Drinking some beers, being dorky. The usual.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a strange girl walks up with a box. We immediately thought “Oh crap, anthrax.” But it was worse.

Free cupcakes, infused with our beer, Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale. We had been talking to Kristen of Eye Candy Cake Company on Twitter. She mentioned she might have a surprise for us, and she was right. These things look delicious. But the question remains… how did they taste?

Beer-infused cupcakes also taste delicious. A chocolate cupcake is the perfect complement for our Drafty Kilt, which is brewed with a little bit of chocolate malt. Kristen, we’re impressed. We want you to know that we approve of putting beer in cupcakes. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

When we formulate our beer recipes, one of things we keep in mind is how our beers will pair with foods. As a company that stands for the weeknights, we realize that a lot of our beer will be consumed with food. It’s cool to see people experimenting with our beers – we’re always available for taste tests!

Monday Night at Diesel Filling Station

Aug 14, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Festivals and Events, Food & beer pairings  //  No Comments

We’re about to make it through our first weekend selling beer (totally overrated, by the way) and want to celebrate tomorrow night.

So come on by Diesel in Virginia Highlands around 7pm. We’ll be hanging out for a few hours. The fine folks at Diesel are whipping up some appetizer pairings for our beers. And the first folks will get a free pint glass (until they run out ? glasses are limited). Where is this “Diesel” we speak of?

Chances are it’s about 4 minutes from your house.

Cooking with Monday Night beers

Jun 10, 2011   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Food & beer pairings, Tastings  //  2 Comments

nate-newsLooking for some food to make that pairs with (and includes) Monday Night beers? Probably not, since you can’t buy our beer yet. If you’re into cooking and into Monday Night, you might want to keep this post bookmarked for future reference.

My Nashville-based brother Nate hosted a tasting party with his chef-girlfriend Colby. They came up with some recipes for onion rings and pizza, made with and paired with our Eye Patch Ale and Drafty Kilt Scotch Ale. Mmmmm.

P.S. My brother runs a website called “Nate News.” Big egos seem to be a running theme in our family.

Duck Rabbit beer dinner at Woodfire Grill

Last night Jeff, Hannah, Teddy, Jeff’s dad, Andy, Gretchen and I went to the Duck Rabbit beer dinner at Woodfire Grill. Teddy, in typical deadbeat-1-month-old fashion, was NOT a paying customer. He brought his own milk, something frowned upon at nicer restaurants. Fortunately Bernard, one of the owners of Woodfire Grill, was a gracious host, and Brad from Duck Rabbit didn’t disappoint. The food was great and the beer was great. The highlight for me was the main course:

Wood grilled molasses marinated pork leg with a braised pork croquette, roasted mushrooms, served over a dried chile and chocolate jus (I think “jus” means “sauce”)

The pork was excellent, but what really set this dish off was the way that it complemented and brought out the chocolate in the Duck Rabbit Porter. The beer was better with the food and the food was better with the beer, which is the mark of a successful pairing, in my book.

For dessert? Our all-time favorite Duck Rabbit beer, the milk stout, paired with a ginger-spiced stout cake:

Notice the amazing photo quality. Oh wait… never mind. Bottom line, I need to do more beer dinners. It was great to celebrate one of the South’s beer gems, Duck Rabbit, with some excellent Atlanta food.

Spent grain beer bread, Monday Night style

Dec 18, 2008   //   by Jonathan   //   Blog, Food & beer pairings  //  2 Comments

Mmmm. There isn’t much better than warm bread, especially when someone else makes it. Matt and Kate took some of our spent grain home awhile ago and last night they offered up the fruits (or carbohydrates) of their labor: some delicious spent grain beer bread, made with grains from either our scotch ale or our stout (I forget).

There is also actual beer in the bread, though Monday Night beer didn’t make it into this batch, as we haven’t been bottling much recently. I’ve been instructed by Joel that I am not to share the recipe yet. He is “still tweaking it.” Yes, Joel is our resident baker. Even though Baker is MY last name. It’s ironic.
